Volunteer Jobs Explanation
The Lazers need every parent to help so that our children and our team can have a fun and successful year. Between 25 and 35 parent volunteers are needed at each swim meet (both dual meets and “B” meets) throughout the year, depending on whether LPRC is the home team. In addition, before and during the year, volunteers help keep the team running by:
- Helping plan and serve at team pep rallies and dinners;
- Ordering swim suits and team gear;
- Helping set up the pool and snack bar for every home meet; and
- Being available after home meets to help with pool/snack bar cleanup.
Many of us enjoy timing (starting and stopping the stop watch for each race) at meets; the action is constant, you usually get some shade, and you have a “front row seat” for each race. However, we need to fill 16-26 additional positions at each meet and, with vacations, illnesses, and other unforeseen circumstances, your Devoted Volunteer Coordinator [DVC] needs to be able to call on other people (or even move people from one role to another) at the last minute.
Our recommendation is for all new parents, and all returning parents, to be available to be a timer, but to also be prepared (and in some cases, trained) to perform additional roles at meets. These roles include starter, stroke and turn judge, clerk of course, relay takeoff judge, marshal (sorry, you don’t get a star, but you do get to wear an orange vest), snack bar worker, sno-cone maker, grill chef extraordinaire, table workers, and data entry.
We also recommend that all returning parents take at least one NVSL course, which is required to be able to perform some roles (starter, referee, stroke and turn judge) and highly recommended for others (data entry, table work, and clerk of course).
Information about various volunteer opportunities is available on the registration form. You can also sign up to volunteer in the schedule area for each individual meet.
When you volunteer as an official (timer, table worker, stroke/turn judge, clerk of course, or other meet official), please wear a white shirt and navy shorts/pants.
Training as a Swim Meet Official
Each year, the NVSL hosts training clinics for meet officials. Please consider attending one of the clinics this year to give our team more options for covering these vital positions. If you attend, please let Kate Wise know. This will help her prepare a report on team officials for NVSL and to fullfill our team duties for each meet.
We are in need of a Lazers volunteer coordinator this season! Help free up the coaches to coach and Kate to be the Team Rep by being the Volunteer Point of Contact at Meets. Parents are required to volunteer when they sign up for the meets. You are just keeping track of the volunteers, checking in the volunteers and putting out fires at the meets.
